Start the year bright

Lunar New Year is celebrated by many Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and other Asian American families across Sacramento — with red lanterns, family meals and decorations meant to bring luck for the year ahead.

The date moves each year, falling between late January and mid-February. With a permanent Minleon system you just pick the dates and your red-and-gold scene comes on at sunset.

It's a nice way to put your Christmas lights back to work just weeks after the holidays — with nothing to hang.

Lunar New Year traditions

Lunar New Year (Spring Festival, Tết, Seollal) is celebrated across Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and many other communities, usually in late January or February. It's a time for family reunion dinners, red envelopes, lion dances, fresh starts and decorations in red and gold — colors associated with luck, joy and warding off bad fortune.

The festival traditionally runs about 15 days and ends with the Lantern Festival, when lanterns light up homes and streets under the first full moon of the year.

Lighting the house for luck and prosperity

Our most popular look is a solid lucky red with gold accents at the peaks, or a slow alternating red-and-gold pattern. For the Lantern Festival night you can switch to a warm, glowing 'lantern' effect. Everything is scheduled in the app so it runs from New Year's Eve through the fifteenth day automatically.

Reunion dinners and visiting family

The New Year's Eve reunion dinner is one of the most important meals of the year, and many households host relatives for several days. A red-and-gold home welcomes guests as they arrive, and looks great in family photos out front. Elk Grove, Sacramento's Pocket and Natomas areas, and the Highway 50 corridor all have large Lunar New Year communities.

After the holiday, the same lights move straight into Valentine's Day red and pink, then St. Patrick's green — no change of decorations needed.

Colors and meaning

Red and gold are the traditional colors of Lunar New Year, linked with good fortune and prosperity. A steady deep red with warm gold accents looks rich and festive. Some families also add a slow shimmer for the evenings when visitors come.

Because the date changes every year, falling in late January or February, you can set it in the app each year or switch scenes with a tap.

Across the full celebration

Lunar New Year celebrations can run for many days, ending with the Lantern Festival. Rather than putting up and taking down temporary lights, the house can stay in red and gold for the whole period, then return to warm white.

The same red and gold palette works for Diwali, weddings and other celebrations, so one install covers several occasions a year.
